A Third Grade Rhythm Lesson

English Class third and fourth graders practiced creating rhythms using animal names in one of their music classes. They composed their own rhythms according to the syllables in the animals’s names while working in small groups. For example,

dog, boa constrictor, octopus, shark

First they chanted the rhythm and then they clapped the rhythm out as a group. When they were feeling confident, they chanted or clapped their composition in a round with two parts. Finally the children used pentatonic boomwhackers  to play the interesting piece that they had created all by themselves. The next step will be  to create musical notation for these compositions.
