Circle Time Starts the Day

Every school day morning, English Class first graders and second graders begin their school day with circle time. Each class gathers together as a community of learners around their respective teachers in their own classrooms.  Songs, chants, weather and the calendar are all part of the routine of circle time. Another very important routine, that was added this year, is the fishbowl activity. One fish is added to the fishbowl for every single day of school. When ten days have passed, a large fish representing ten, replaces ten little fish. This helps explain how all those fish will fit in the fishbowl. It also is a very concrete way of demonstrating the fact that our everyday number system is a Base-10 system.
