English Class second graders are beginning a study unit on food and where it comes from. Last week they discussed the parts of plants that we eat. The second graders realized that we eat different parts of certain plants. We eat the stems of some plants (rhubarb and celery), the seeds of some plants (peas and sunflower seeds), the fruit of some plants (blueberries and apples), the leaves of some plants (lettuce and spinach) as well as the roots of some plants (carrots and beets). In art class the children drew carrots and turnips using soft chalk pastels. The picture above shows these drawings hanging outside their classroom.
