Learning about the Parts of a Book with Technology

English Class third graders are about to begin reading their first real chapter book together. Before doing that the pupils learned about the different parts of a book including the ISBN number, the author, the illustrator, the table of contents, the title page, etc.  After doing some notebook work, the third graders transferred what they had learned to using technology.

Using the book that they are beginning to read, Flat Stanley, the children took a photograph of the the outside of the book. Then, using a free app called Skitch, the pupils labeled the various parts of the book.

Flat Stanley is a classic children’s book that is more than fifty years old. The inventive story draws children into a world of travel and adventure. The third graders appear to be very eager to enter this world!
